Analysis of trailer 1
by Elizabeth
The next thing we see is an establishing shot of the woman in the wheelchair and her father. The use of this shot shows the things that surrounds them and also to show how it is a personal connection between the woman and her father. We are able to tell from the mise en scene of the setting, that it is in a rural area away from civilisation.

Yet another shot of the rear view mirror from the car is shown, but this time it is shot from the outside of the car. It shows a man pushing a wheelchair, we can't see the man's face but we can assume that it is the same man that was in the shot before where only half his face was shown. We know that the wheelchair belongs to the woman as she is disabled. The audience realise that the man is actually the woman's Dad.

We then see a focus pull of the man's reflection in the rear view mirror. The audience are instantly made aware of another character in the film. The fact that only half of his face is shown indicates that it is necessary for the audience to get to know a character bit by bit like the woman who is the main character. From his facial expression, we can see that he has a neutral expression, also the hat he is wearing seems cheap which suggests that he is not of high status or socioeconomic class.

The next thing we see is another close up of the character, from this we can see the facial expression she adopts. We can start to see that she is the main character in the film as the camera privileges her and gives her more screen time than any other character in the film. She is also foregrounded and the house is in the background, this is to signify the importance the woman holds.
15 - 17 seconds into the trailer the logos of the production companies are shown: 'LIONSGATE' and 'BH PRODUCTIONS'. This indicates that they could have partnered together to produce the film. The use of the block capital letters connotes the importance and empasis on them. This is two of the many titles that appear in this trailer, as it is a convention of trailers. The colour scheme is similar as they are dark and have a hint of bright colours to signify the genre and the tone of the film.

It then cuts to a high angle close up of the woman, this is to put emphasis on her facial expression and what we can see, it seems as if something is not right she looks concerned about something. Also, the use of this makes the audience become more aware of the woman, and what she is about to endure throughout the trailer.

We then see a long shot of a woman in a wheelchair on the phone to someone. The use of the long shot emphasises the surrounding and this makes the audience get to know the character from a distance before getting to know the character more up close and personal as the trailer progresses. The mise en scene of the lighting is dark and eerie and the pace of the trailer at this stage is not at a fast pace which shows that the opening scene is calm but foreshadows the trouble that is to come.

The next we see is a black screen, this is significant because, this reinforces the genre of horror which is associated with dark imagery, as a result the stark contrast from the green to the black makes the audience aware that they are watching a horror film.

The first thing that is noticeable and a convention of film trailers is a green band disclaimer. This displays that the trailer is not suitable for all ages, it is a PG 13 which means that if the child is under 13 they can go and watch it in the cinema accompanied by their parent.
The first trailer I will be analysing is 'Jessabelle'. It is an upcoming horror.
The storyline goes as follows: After losing her fiancé in a car accident, grief-stricken Jessie (Sarah Snook) retreats to her father's rundown Louisiana mansion, where she finds a gift from her long-dead mother, and a spirit intent on killing her. I will be analysisng the different features that combine together to construct a film trailer. I will be looking at: camerawork, angles, editing, sound and mise en scene. These will give me insight into what makes a good and effective film trailer. This will be beneficial when it comes to making our own film trailer.
